A LITTLE HELP BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Your first doctor or hospital appointment: what to take

By Max, founder of Room to Say · 28 October 2026

A first hospital visit can feel unfamiliar. This guide is about a planned outpatient appointment, where you see a clinician without staying overnight. Admissions, procedures and tests may have different instructions.

Start with your appointment letter

Check the location, time, arrival instructions and anything the clinic specifically asks you to bring. Follow its instructions about tests or preparation. If something is unclear, contact the clinic rather than guessing.

What should I take to my first appointment?

Your clinic may ask for particular documents or samples. Its instructions take priority over a general checklist.

I’ve never done this before. What do I say?

“This is my first appointment here. I’ve brought some notes, but I’m not sure where to start. Could you help me work through the main points?”

You can explain what you’ve noticed in everyday terms. You do not need to arrive knowing the diagnosis.

Ask for support before the visit

You can ask about bringing a friend, family member or carer. Contact the clinic about interpreting, accessibility or other communication needs. Allow time to find the department, and ask staff for directions when you arrive.

Leave with a next step

Check what happens after the appointment and who to contact if you have questions. If a test is planned, ask how you will hear about its results.
